Bauxite — The Aluminum Ore

India is the world’s 5th largest bauxite producer (~24 million tonnes annually) and holds the 5th largest reserves globally (~660 million tonnes).

Geographic Requirements

  • Formation: Residual weathering of aluminum-rich rocks (mostly basalt and laterite)
  • Climate: Tropical monsoon with alternating wet and dry seasons (laterization)

Distribution

State Share Key Deposits
Odisha ~55% Panchpatmali (Koraput) — largest bauxite deposit in India (~340 MT reserves); Kalahandi, Rayagada, Sundargarh
Gujarat ~12% Kutch, Saurashtra, Kheda
Jharkhand ~10% Ranchi, East Singhbhum
Chhattisgarh ~8% Bastar, Mainpat (Surguja), Durg
Maharashtra ~5% Kolhapur, Ratnagiri
Tamil Nadu ~5% Nilgiris, Salem

Major Mining and Refining Complexes

  • NALCO (National Aluminium Company): Panchpatmali mines (Odisha) with alumina refinery at Damanjodi, smelter at Angul
  • HINDALCO: Renukoot (UP), Belgaum (Karnataka), Muri (Jharkhand), Sambalpur (Odisha)
  • BALCO (Bharat Aluminium Company): Korba (Chhattisgarh)
  • Vedanta Aluminium: Jharsuguda (Odisha) — world’s largest single-location aluminum smelter

Mica — The Sheet Mineral

India was once the world’s largest producer of sheet mica, accounting for 60% of global output. Mica production has declined drastically due to synthetic substitutes, but India still has significant deposits.

Distribution

  • Jharkhand: Koderma (largest mica belt in the world; “Mica Capital of the World”), Gaya, Hazaribagh, Giridih — mostly ruby mica
  • Bihar: Nawada, Muzaffarpur, Jamui
  • Rajasthan: Ajmer, Bhilwara, Tonk, with some production
  • Andhra Pradesh: Nellore mica belt — best quality sheet mica

Types

Type Color Uses
Muscovite (Potash mica) White, light green Electrical insulation, capacitors, furnace windows
Phlogopite (Magnesia mica) Brown, amber High-temperature applications
Biotite (Iron-magnesium mica) Black, dark green No industrial value; mostly waste

Decline

  • Production fell from ~50,000 tonnes (1950s) to ~10,000 tonnes today
  • Reasons: Synthetic alternatives, labor issues, child labor scandals (Koderma)
  • Koderma Special Mica Zone: revived interest in mica mining for electronics (5G, smartphones, EV batteries)

Copper

India’s copper reserves are modest (~150 million tonnes of ore), contributing only ~4 million tonnes annually.

Distribution

State Share Key Mines
Rajasthan ~50% Khetri-Singhana (Jhunjhunu) — largest belt; Kolihan, Dariba
Madhya Pradesh ~25% Malajkhand (Balaghat) — largest copper mine in central India
Jharkhand ~20% Singhbhum — Mosaboni, Rakha, Surda (now mostly depleted)

Major Companies

  • HCL (Hindustan Copper Ltd.) — only integrated copper producer; mines in Rajasthan, MP, Jharkhand
  • Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper (Tuticorin, TN) — closed since 2018 (pollution protest)
  • Copper imports fill the gap: India imports ~50% of its copper requirements

Gold

India is the world’s 2nd largest gold consumer but a minor producer (~1.5 tonnes annually vs. consumption of ~800 tonnes).

Deposits

State Location
Karnataka Kolar Gold Fields (now closed — deepest mines in the world, operational 1880-2001); Hutti Gold Mines (Raichur; only gold mine producing in India); Ramagiri (Anantapur); Uti
Jharkhand Pahardia, Malkocha (minor)
Andhra Pradesh Ramagiri

Hutti Gold Mines Co. Ltd. — only primary gold producer in India; average grade 5-6 g/tonne
